1964
Matrix numbers used the Wide Engraving typeface.
The HörZu release of Please Please Me (“Die zentrale Tanzschaffe”) had following nomenclature for matrix numbers:
- Mono: HZE<-><3-digit title number><side>-<cut number>
The mono PPM has a hyphen after HZE on Side B, but no hyphen on Side A. So it’s HZE 117A-1 but HZE-117B-1 - Stereo: SHZE-<3-digit title number><side>-<cut number>
Example: SHZE-117B-1
Please Please Me (HörZu, 1966)
1965-1970
HörZu releases after Please Please Me (Help!, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper) had following nomenclature for matrix numbers:
- SHZE <3-digit title number>-<side>-<cut number>
Example: SHZE 162-B-1
Matrix numbers used the Wide Engraving typeface.
Note: Non-Hörzu versions (for Switzerland or foreign forces), while not using the logo on cover and labels, still had the same SHZE matrix numbers (except Revolver).
Help! (HörZu, 1973)
1970 (late) – ca. 1979
EMI’s collaboration with HörZu continued until ca. 1974. After that, former HörZu titles changed shortly to Odeon and then to Apple.
Matrix numbers for new HörZu cuts were done using the new Stamping at Label style, close to label. The nomenclature remained the same, however, the hyphen before the side indicator (A or B) disappeared.
- SHZE <3-digit title number> <side>-<cut number>
Example: SHZE 327 A-1
Magical Mystery Tour (HörZu, 1973)
Later reissues on Odeon or Apple had also the new short EMI number added to the original matrices in the Additional Engraving style, usually above or below the original matrix. They also had a hyphen before the side indicator, even if the original SHZE didn’t have it.
- SHZE <3-digit title number>-<side>-<cut number> <5-digit title number>-<side>-<cut number>
Example: SHZE 327 A-1 04449-A-1
Magical Mystery Tour (Apple, 1977)
Titles that were previously released on HörZu but were recut after changing to Odeon or Apple, still contained an additional SHZE matrix number. Both parts of the matrix would be stamped very close to the label in the Stamping at Label style. The hyphen before the side indicator was dropped. Examples are Help! or late 70’s Sgt. Pepper, both on Apple.
- SHZE <3-digit title number> <side>-<cut number> <5-digit title number> <side>-<cut number>
Example: SHZE 16X2 B-3 04257 B-3
Help (Apple, late 70s)
After 1979
SHZE Matrix numbers were phased out.
