If taken for itself alone, it would sound splendid, with strong, detailed midrange and fine-resolved trebles. In the hi-hat area it is on par with both the Japanese and the Australian version, plus it retains the original’s unbanded structure.

However, in a battle it immediately reveals its weakness. The bass has been significantly turned down. The intro beats of “Something” fall somewhat short, as Paul’s bass just does not deliver what Ringo’s drums announce. This is valid for the entire album: although the overall characteristics of the sound are quite close to the -2/-1 version, the bass is weaker throughout.

Japanese Pressing (1969)

AP-8815

Discogs

Matrix:
Side A: YEX-749 1S3
Side B: YEX-750 1S2
Banded

The Japanese pressings are usually rumored to be mastered rather on the higher end, having the bass somewhat reduced. Fortunately, it is not the case with this one. This Japanese version’s bass actually extends slightly lower than the -2/-1 version, and so do the high cymbals. In this respect, it is quite similar to the Aussie version, though on Side A it loses out a bit in direct comparison, as the middles are sometimes slightly buried in the mix – for example, the repeated “come together – yeah” bits in the outro of “Come Together”.

Though it becomes a little bit different on Side B, starting with “Here Comes the Sun”. On this dynamically complex song (one of the ultimate litmus tests for this album), the Japanese pressing has a chance to really shine (and the dead-quiet Japanese vinyl greatly helps at the start of the song). It offers great detailed bass, filigree trebles and good presence in the singing, while the acoustic guitar and underlying strings remain spot-on.

1979 Australian Reissue

PCSO-7088

Discogs

Matrix:
Side A: YEX 749-3
Side B: YEX 749-2
Banded

The second Australian pressing I actually got when I was hunting for a cheap alternative for a -2/-1 matrix. The basses go slightly lower, the cymbals are a tiny bit more brilliant, without damaging the integrity of the mix. The middles are also very nice and pronounced. When considering John’s voice on “Come Together”, on all the other versions it comes off-center, slightly to the right. Whereas on this 1981 German version, it comes slightly from the left. The other instruments being the same, mind ye.

Also, what is most noticeable on this version, is da Big Bass. That is all-powerful, not just the bass guitar, but the bass drums as well. In parts, it’s actually distracting.
On the other hand, the trebles are not really that good. The cymbals often lack definition and sound murky (for example during the “Come Together” solo). The middles are pronounced as well (the beginning of “Here Comes the Sun” sounds very nice, until the first bass comes in, then it’s just continuous all-overpowering droning.

The Verdict

0th place: -2/-1 version (Denmark). In places it stays beneath its possibilities, but as an overall “most rounded” experience of tracks with very different-sounding characteristics it is probably the best common denominator between sounding powerful, while being delicate and clear. The downside: it’s not very easy to find one at a reasonable price in a near-mint condition (which is important for low-volume songs).

1st place: a tie between the Japanese AP-8815 from 1969 and the 2nd Australian pressing from 1979. Both have slightly extended low and high ends. Side B seems to sound slightly better on the Japanese one, while the Aussie has slightly better midrange clarity on Side A. As for availability: the Japanese is way easier to find in NM for reasonable money.

2nd place: 1st German version (1C 062-04 243).
