YEX 773-3U
Side B: YEX 774-4 HTM

This 4th UK pressing comes in my copy of the BC13 box. Basically, this pressing was in production between 1976 and 1980.

My copy (as per date code on inner sleeve) is from 1978 and uses the 3U matrix which was cut in 1970 for Side A. Side B, however, contains a newer -4 matrix with HTM signature. There is also -4 Side A in existence, however, I don’t have it.

Let’s listen to Side A now. “Two of Us” is starting out fine, with very good details on the acoustic guitars and nice low end on the bass drums. The singing is embedded harmonically into the soundscape. “Dig a Pony”: some sibilance is audible on the first “you can celebrate”. Other than that, the bass and the drums are a tad weak, the guitars being most prominent on the outliers of the stereo panorama. “Across the Universe” is of course heavily treated, the first part sounding rather compressed. The Phil Spector orchestra augmentation sounds fine, though. Now “I Me Mine” is probably the most dynamic song on Side A, and though the bass feels a bit weak, the song sounds splendidly detailed on the guitars wide on the stereo panorama. “Dig It” is okay. Now, the closing track, “Let it Be” just shines. The grand piano, the bass, the drums, everything is just in place. The trebles are fine and detailed. The voice is harmonically embedded, it sounds just right: not buried, not standing out. “Maggie Mae”, has some good trebles, though it lacks a bit of definition, being cut close to the center label and all that.

Side B. “I’ve Got a Feeling”: The bass is quite alright here; the trebles are quite pronounced. Good instrument separation, the vocals are spot-on. “One after 909”: nice, punchy bass, fine instrument separation (organ and solo guitar on the stereo channels!), the vocals are once again quite harmonically embedded into the stage. “The Long and Winding Road”: very pleasant, very detailed. There is both power in the bass and detail in the treble. Paul’s voice has a nice presence. The orchestra, while not everyone’s cup of tea, sounds very fine. “For You Blue” is acoustically a pleasure: good bass, vocal presence, fine trebles and a great intricate instrument separation. “Get Back” sounds intentionally muted (solo guitar, organ, vocals), however, the rhythm guitar, the bass and Ringo’s cymbalos reveal that there is nothing wrong with the mix itself. Bass is fine, the midrange is detailed, trebles are nice and clear.

Overall: the UK is just great. While some of the songs are not necessarily audiophile stuff, the album still profits from a good instrument separation and vocal / instrumental presence. Side A cut in 1970 is slightly weak in the bass area. Side B, being cut later, is less affected by it. A splendid version.

German 1st Cut (1970)

1C 062-04 433 Y

Discogs | German Matrix Database

Matrix:
Side A: 1C062-04433-Y-A-1
Side B: 1C062-04433-Y-B-1

This version is quite common in Germany. It was first released in the UK-like collector’s boxset, but also separately. Unlike in UK, the Apple on the back has always been red. This particular first cut of “Let It Be” was in use in Germany throughout the 70s and was only superseded in mid-80s by an analogue unmarked DMM version. My copy is from 1973.

Now for the sound. Side A starts out with “Two of Us”, and here the difference to the UK is already audible. The bass has been boosted, but the mid-high range feels somehow reduced, losing the brilliance of the acoustic guitars and vocals. Somehow it sounds muffled, like from under a blanket. Same goes for “Dig a Pony”: the bass is amplified, but the vocals are somewhat buried. “Across the Universe” has the buried vocals as well. “I Me Mine”, however, profits from the stronger bass end, while the trebles are still detailed enough, having been strong to begin with. “Dig It” is okay. Now for the title track: unfortunately, the first part is sort of muted, the vocals buried, the grand piano lacking definition. It gets slightly better once the bass, drums & orchestra kick in, however, the vocals remain buried in the mix. “Maggie Mae” has more bass substance and still the same good stereo separation, but the trebles are dull, like through a blanket.

Side B: the difference in bass is less pronounced than on Side A, probably due to a later UK cut for that side. “I’ve Got a Feeling”: basses and trebles are nice and detailed, though the vocals feel a bit buried. “One after 909”: similar to the UK, but slightly less overall definition. “The Long and Winding Road”: very similar to the UK as well, actually, with a tiny bit less presence in the vocals. “For You Blue”: actually, a very nice definition, punchy bass, good drums, good separation. “Get Back”: again, similar to the UK, but the vocals are slightly buried again. On the other hand, the trebles (cymbalos) are actually more pronounced than on the UK version.

Overall: at least Side A, in comparison to the -3U UK cut, loses out in detail and clarity. While having a stronger bass, the German version sounds like through a blanket, losing details on the high end and vocals. Side B is however more similar to the late UK -4 cut, though it still suffers somewhat from muted vocals and trebles.

Japanese EAS pressing (1976)

EAS-80561

Discogs

Matrix:
Side A: YEX-773 9S2
Side B: YEX-774 9S4

This Japanese pressing came out on Japanese Apple label in the so-called “Country Flag” series in late 70s. Interestingly, the Japanese versions of this album use the US-type gatefold packaging, as opposed to European versions.

Now for Side A. “Two of Us”. Hmm. Very interesting. The bass is slightly stronger. The trebles are quite pronounced. The vocals are less prominent, but less buried than on the German one. The acoustic guitars are fine-defined. Overall, a bit fuller than the more-trebly UK version. “Dig a Pony”. The bass is again stronger, though the trebles are a tad reduced (cymbalos); the sibilance on “celebrate” is not there. The voice has less presence, it’s more embedded. “Across the Universe”: the processed part at the beginning sounds a bit fuller than the UK. On the other hand, once the orchestra starts, the vocals lose some of the presence. “I Me Mine” – trebles and vocals sound somewhat muted, though the guitars on the stereo panorama are good, and so is the bass. “Dig It” is okay. “Let it Be”, while having nice strong basses, it sounds a bit muted in the trebles and vocals. “Maggie Mae” is muffled altogether, lacking definition, trebles and details.

Side B: “I’ve Got a Feeling”: Basses and trebles are pronounced, but the midrange is somewhat lacking, the electric piano and vocals being buried. “One After 909” sounds a bit murky, the trebles being muted, the whole thing lacking definition. “The Long and Winding Road”: the orchestra is full and detailed, but the vocals again feel less present. “For You Blue” – very nice, intricate, dynamic – though the vocals lack a bit of presence once again. “Get Back”, on the other hand, has some nice pronounced vocals, but the trebles (cymbalos) are slightly reduced.

Overall: more of a mixed bag, actually. While bass is stronger (not as much as in the German version), and the trebles are (mostly) fine, the midrange is somehow lacking, both in definition and in presence.

The Verdict

0th place: the UK. While Side A (-3U cut from 1970) is a bit weaker in the bass area, it wins big time in definition, details and vocal presence. Side B (-4 cut from 1976) has a stronger bass as well, while remaining detailed and having good trebles. It would be actually quite interesting to hear a -4/-4 version.

1st place: the JP. It is a mixed bag, actually. The bass is stronger (though less booming than the German version), and the vocals are a bit buried. As for trebles and overall detail, it varies from song to song. Nevertheless, it’s quite fun to listen to and sounds fine for the most part.

2nd place: the DE.
